On Dr. Seuss’s birthday we rotated through different centers with our parents.  We made oobleck and we put stuff in it to see if it would float or sink.  We went fishing for rhyming words.  We wrote stories on the computer.  You got to chose a setting, character, and even music.  We showed our parents our video that we taped.  They watched the video on an I-pod Touch.  At some of the centers you could earn a prize like candy or a pencil.  We had a sheet that we put stickers on when we completed a center.  At lunch we had green eggs and ham and green jello.  It was a terrific day!

Last week, we met with the artist Marina Lee to create artwork for our school.  We helped make designs on sea creatures.  They are going to be displayed in the cafeteria.  It was messy, but fun!

We read so much everyday.  We read in small groups during centers with Mrs. Batchelor.  We also read during independent reading.  Reading is fun because you get to read cool stories and you get to learn what characters do and what they are thinking.  We read big books as a class during shared reading.  The guest reader reads a book to us during snack.  When we get to school in the morning, we also read books.  Mrs. Batchelor and Mrs. Driscoll read to us too.  We do a lot of reading and learning!

We had so much fun making popcorn posters on the computer, collecting the money, and delivering popcorn.  Thank you to Mrs. Goss, Mrs. Meissner, Ms. Manriquez, Mr. Kocher, and Mrs. Geason for their help.  It was a great success!

We have been enjoying listening to each other read!

This is our class watching the guest reader read.  We brought our stuffed animals to school because we filled up our marble jar.   We earn marbles by being good, working hard, and listening.

We have been learning about germs and viruses.  Nurse Belfuiss came to read us a book about germs.  She brought a bag of stuff.  We had to decide if it was something we could share or not.  We learned that when you touch something dirty or sneeze without covering your mouth germs spread.  She brought pictures of real germs, but real germs are not as big as the pictures.  Over 1,000 germs can fit on the tip of a pencil.  To keep healthy, we can wash our hands with soap and water, visit the doctor when you are sick, and keep our things clean.  We can also eat healthy foods.  Germs can make you sick.  Our blood cells fight bad germs in our bodies.

Last week we got to taste apples and we graphs our favorite apples.  Golden Delicious was our class’s favorite apple.  In math we are practicing adding, subtracting, and story problems.
We are excited for Halloween and we like the decorations in our classroom.

We try to do a really good job. We are getting better at being quiet and listening, but we are going to keep practicing. Everyday, we have a helper of the day. The helper always stands in the front of the line and helps Mrs. Batchelor. We have been busy working on math, working in centers, writing, and learning about insects. We have learned a lot about butterflies. We even have real caterpillars in our classroom! They have already gotten bigger. We think they are going to make a chrysalis soon. We have 5th grade buddies. It was fun planting lupine seeds with them. First grade is cool!
